The Craft and Hobby Association trade show took place again this January in Anaheim, California. The hottest trend in the last couple years is that you can visit the show via video webcasts, blog postings, tweets, and even online radio shows. I have pulled together a few trends from the show including hot icons, trendy colors, new paper lines, and nifty gadgets to give you a quick overview of what you can expect to see at your favorite scrapbook stores, craft stores, and online shops this spring.
1. 2014 Iconic Shapes – Foxes, Cameras, and More
Every year there are a few shapes or designs that you see over and over again in many different lines from several manufacturers. For 2014 one of the hot icons is a traditional looking camera. You can see an example of the camera icon on the new line from Webster’s Pages called Sweet Routine. It is included in their Tags and Prompts Stickers, Word Stickers, and more in that collection. As a side note, Webster’s Pages also did a fine job of representing the new color of the year and colors of spring in their collections. You can read more in the article Scrapbook Trends Color of the Year and Upcoming Colors of Spring. The Echo Park “My Life” mini collection also prominently includes a camera icon.
Another hot icon was the fox. (I am so sorry that “What Does the Fox Say?” is now playing incessantly in your head.) Adorn It and Bella Blvd. both had adorables foxes in their new patterned paper lines. Bella Blvd. also has the camera icon in their Snapshots collection.
Stars, stars, and more stars. If there is a shape of the year, it very well could be the star. You can find stars on chipboard, wood, stickers, die cut shapes and more and too many collections to name. Bella Blvd. has an entire line called “Lucky Starz.”
Video game controllers were another popular icon.Crate Paper has a vintage Game Boy in their Boys Rule collection. Other stand out icons were vintage cassette tapes and floppy disks.
2. Textures – Burlap and Wood
I have mentioned textures in previous Scrapbook Trends articles here on About.com Scrapbooking because they have been and still continue to be an important part of scrapbooking. This year the hottest texture seems to be burlap. Burlap made an appearance last year but has really gained steam for 2014. You can find sheets of it, die cut burlap shapes, and even burlap sticker shapes. Petaloo has burlap trims, butterflies, flowers, and more in a variety of colors.
Wood veneer is everywhere this year. You can find wood laser cut shapes in many, many product lines. Stars are of course a very popular wood shape. Studio Calico is an interesting example because they used a wood grain look and put it on sequins.
A newcomer, Freckled Fawn has some beautiful wood cuts called Wood Clips. They include numbers, shapes, word hearts, and more. They even have a monthly embellishment kit club.
3. Continued and Expanded – Pocket Pages
Pocket page scrapbooking has been popular for a few years now. I even saw an end-cap of Project Life supplies at my local super grocery store a few months ago. What’s new this season is that nearly every scrapbook product manufacturer wants to help you scrapbook your Instagram photos. It seems that nearly every new line has 4 inch x 4 inch and 2 inch x 2 inch square pockets, pages, cards, journaling boxes, tags and more to make it quick and easy to pull together an Instagram photo album. We R Memory Keepers designed a small album kit designed especially for these insta-projects. As an expansion to their Albums Made Easy line, they now have adorable mini albums that are designed to make it quick and easy for you to create a keepsake with square photos. They have 3 ring binder albums, 4×4 inch and 2×2 inch pocket page protectors, and full sets of embellishments and frames.
4. Cool Tools
I love new gadgets and tools that make scrapbooking not only quicker and easier but also more fun. We R Memory Keepers is always a good place to look for the latest and greatest new tools. This year, I am excited to get a chance to play with their new Flower Punch Board. I love making flowers for my pages, cards, and even home decorating. This expansion to their line of Punch Boards helps you to make beautiful, layered flowers in no time.
Another cool new tool is from Tim Holtz and Ranger. The Distress Marker Spritzer is an small, hand-held air tool that placed the tip of a marker right beneath a puff of air. This allows you to spritz ink onto your pages, cards, chipboard embellishments, and so much more for a rustic, air brushed look. It works great with the Ranger brush ink pens but can also be used with pens you already own.
